Yoshikitty – Inspired By Rock Star YOSHIKI – Will Compete With Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, And My Melody

yoshikitty—the popular Sanrio character inspired by rock star YOSHIKI—has been selected to compete in the 2021 Sanrio Character Ranking contest for the 7th consecutive year against other popular characters Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, My Melody, and many more.

The intense competition brings together the most popular 80 Sanrio characters. The battle for rankings intensifies each year, with the total number of votes cast last year exceeding 14 million. Now in its 36th year, the prestigious event is open to vote for Sanrio enthusiasts around the globe. 

This year, voting starts April 9th and goes through May 24th Japan time. Fans are eligible to vote daily from all mobile devices. Final results will be announced on June 8th.

Proving to be a true icon, yoshikitty placed at an all-time high of 3rd overall, beating Hello Kitty, and placed in the top 10 for the past five years. Last year, yoshikitty also defeated stiff competition to take number 1 in France, Germany, and Brazil, and number 2 in China among other favorites including Cinnamoroll and My Melody. The overwhelming demand for yoshikitty led to retailers quickly selling out of merchandise, with orders backed up for months. 

Born in 2009 and modeled after a real person, rock star YOSHIKI, yoshikitty has had unprecedented success. To date, yoshikitty is associated with top name brands listing over 500 diverse products. Items range from high fashion clothing, jewelry, postage stamps, and even a $10,000 solid gold figurine.


Sanrio has released new rules for this year’s ranking:

Worldwide Voting:
1. Online (1 vote per day, votes can only be cast from a smartphone)

In Japan:
2. Store (3 votes/500yen purchase)
3. Online store purchase: here
4. Ichigo Shimbun (by using the ballot attached to the April, May and June issue)
5. Sanrio+ members only Smile vote
6. Sanrio+ members only Ticket vote
7. Outside of Sanrio (Made-to-order, etc.) *TBA
